Overview
|
Entropy is a relative newcomer to the Multiversal scene; while there are Entropy agents operating on a number of worlds across the Multiverse, they have nowhere near the amount of influence or power organizations such as the Eternals are able to wield, and even the R Syndicate is arguably better funded and more entrenched. Entropy's influence is still not a thing to be discounted, though--several previously peaceful worlds now in the midst of bloody wars and/or their death throes attest to just how potent Entropy's destructive power can be. |
Entropy's Organization
Despite the obviously chaotic bent of the majority of its employees, Entropy's internal organization is a surprisingly well-ordered system, with clearly delineated chains of command and responsibility stretching from President Stark at the top to the lowliest member of maintenance at the bottom. However, it is also a system of organization in which assassination is a tacitly accepted method of advancement, thus ensuring that only the most clever, suspicious, and well-prepared survive.
President
President Alexander Stark stands at the top of Entropy's hierarchy. Although the entire corporation's resources are at his disposal, he seems to prefer to leave most of the company's day-to-day affairs in the hands of the various section heads, only occasionally deigning to meddle. Despite his apparent disconnectedness, though, Stark always seems to know far more than he should about everything and everyone within the company, and anyone who has long remained in Entropy's employ is at least uneasy about him, even if they've never met him face to face. Stark has been the president of Entropy since its inception.
Divisions
Beneath the office of the President, the company has four divisions: Technology, Finance, Operations, and Oversight.
Technology Division
The Technology Division is responsible for work not only in technology, but also magic, psionics, and several other fields, in an effort to ensure that Entropy is always on the cutting edge. Technology Division is one of two independent divisions directly under Stark's control; those in the Technology Division do not have to answer to officers of any other division, and are in fact kept quite isolated from the rest of the company for the most part. This arrangement allows Stark to keep tight control over the technology and systems that allow Entropy to maintain its operations across the Multiverse.
The Technology Division at large tends to focus on acquisition, reverse engineering, and possible improvement of extant technology; the smaller and more secretive Research and Development subdivision focuses on more esoteric experimentation. A number of Entropy's field agents--including Mu, Terrence "Battery" Mackenzie, and others--are products of the R&D subdivision.
Finance Division
The Finance Division runs the more mundane, day-to-day concerns of Entropy; it is their responsibility to ensure that Entropy never runs out of money. Finance's activities are further subdivided into various sections: one is devoted to commodity investment and trading on a Multiversal scale, another looks for markets in which the various non-secure technological advancements Entropy has on file can be trademarked/copyrighted and manufactured for profit, a third is responsible for ensuring that the various field agents and branch divisions have the funds necessary to maintain their operations, and so on. Subdivisions of Entropy Finance are scattered on a number of worlds in the Multiverse, typically registered under different corporate names.
Embezzlement is kept to a minimum through a combination of good pay and careful personality screening--employees in the Finance division are, for the most part, dry and unassuming sorts who lack ambition and have a love of complex number-crunching. Even so, embezzlement does happen now and again; it is typically overlooked, though, so long as the offender does not grow too brazen.
Operations Division
The Operations Division is the largest and most important portion of Entropy Inc; they are the ones responsible for the various bits of nastiness that Entropy has perpetrated. At the very top of the Operations Division are an "Inner Circle" consisting of a handful of elite officers; beneath each of them are a number of experienced "Prime Agents" who function as coordinators and dispatchers, and at the bottom of the division lies the pool of Field Agents. The Field Agents are divided into grades based on ability and past success and paid accordingly, with the highest ranking field agents making nearly as much as the Prime Agents.
Field Agents are the ones actually responsible for carrying out Entropy's dirty work, and are known to be some of the most colorful personalities within the corporation. Typically, Field Agents are divided into teams of three members--that way, every agent has two other agents watching them--although there have, on rare occasions, been teams of up to twenty-one members, and there are a few agents who insist on working without any teammates whatsoever. How long these team assignments last depends on the agents' temperaments and the level of success the team has. Once needed, they are dispatched to a target world with a directive to work towards; depending on the scale and importance of the operation, they may be working on their own or under the supervision of a superior.
Assassination as a means for advancement is most often encountered within the Operations Division.
Oversight Division
The second of Entropy's two independent divisions, the Oversight Division reports to the President alone. The Oversight Division's primary purpose is to objectively analyze the results of failed Entropy operations, find where and with whom the fault lies in the incident, and recommend suitable censure--up to and including termination, in the most final sense of the word imaginable. Secondary functions include analysis of any suspicious deaths within the company--while assassination is tacitly accepted, doing a sloppy job of it is not--and screening of prospective new employees. In short, the Oversight Division functions as Entropy's Internal Affairs branch.
Oversight is the smallest branch of the company, consisting only of a nine-member Oversight Committee and a handful of investigators/data retrieval specialists that make sure the committee is suitably informed. Despite their small size, though, they are the most hated branch of the company...and feared more than anything else within the company, save President Stark himself.
