Rurouni Taikai Legends: 'Til All Are One
Hosted by Switchblade in October 2003, this was an invasion tournament which took place entirely at [Shunyata.org]'s Forums. A tournament involving teams of two, the sponsorship pool consisted of characters from any fiction, as long as they had some kind of rivalry with their partner.
The tournament involved the story of Unity, who seeked to bring peace and harmony to the Multiverse, and tried using the feuding sponsors as his test subjects to find out how to do so. The winner of the tournament was the team of Prized Possessions, consisting of JSG (sponsering S-ko) and LordLocke (sponsering Zappa). The Runner Up team was Tracing Paper, consisting of gbeans (sponsering Evil Nancy) and MonkeyHitman (sponsering Yomiko Readman)
Round List
Round One: Centre
Round Two: Love
Round Three: Will
Round Four: Hate
Round Five: Fate
Round Six: Chaos/Washington D.C.
Final Round: First World
All locations, barring Washington D.C., are original.
Continuity
Rurouni Taikai Legends has the distinction of being one of the few tournaments to have no ties to the Eternal cannon and, indeed, to be completely incompatible with it. RTL took place in a universe created by a force known as Creation and monitered by the seven Children of Creation: Justice, Chaos, Will, Fate, Love, Hate, and The one of Many Names. Each of the Children ruled over a single world, the various round locations in RTL.
Battle System
Rurouni Taikai Legends' battle system was heavily based on the level advancement system in the Square video game Seiken Densetsu 3. Each character began as either a Light or a Dark, depending on if they leaned more heavily towards good or evil, respectively. Characters levelled up twice, and at each new level they advanced to a new class, based on whether they used more "good" abilities or "evil" abilities. The class abilities themselves tended to be simple hurt or heal ones, giving RTL one of the most basic systems in some time.
The key to RTL's gameplay, of course, was the teams. Each sponsor was paired with another to form a two-member team. These teams' damage and healing was tallied by combining the scores of the individuals. Teams who had taken the most damage each round were voted off, generally two per round. RTL did not allow sidekicks.
